The Moon Sign in Astrology

The Moon sign in astrology is commonly known to represent our emotions. And this is completely true; the placement of our Moon sign is how we are emotionally, how we express those emotions, and our emotional needs. But what else can the Moon sign signify?

The conditions of the Moon sign in one's birth chart can speak to the person's mother. This can manifest as one's Moon sign being a prominent placement in their mother's chart, or will represent the relationship someone has with their mother, whether it's unhealthy, transformative, or meaningful.

In addition to the mother, the Moon sign can point to one's home conditions. Were their home environments intense and unloving or nurturing and giving?

The house the Moon sign falls in is often the area of life that goes through the most changes, uncertainty, or ups and downs. This is because the Moon changes, ebbs and flows in a rapid pattern.

The Moon signifies someone's spiritual connection, as the Moon represents intuition. Are you spiritual and intuitive, a characteristic of Water moon signs, or do you best connect spiritually and ground yourself through nature and being out in the real world, a characteristic of Earth moon signs?

The Moon rules the ocean, the colors white and silver, the flower Jasmine and the blue lotus plant, pregnancy and birth, the breasts, family and privacy. It is a soft, deep luminary that is worshipped, and deservingly so.

The Signs

Scorpio, Pisces, and Cancer moons tend to be spiritual, psychic, or interested in the occult. Whereas Scorpio moons are more intense with their feelings and more prone to delving into occult topics, Cancer moons may be softer with their feelings and open. Pisces moons can be reactive, but will lead their life with their feelings. Water moons often have a specifically emotional or meaningful relationship/story they associate with their mothers that will impact them forever.

The Moon is uncomfortable in Capricorn as Capricorn feels repressed and unemotional, whereas the moon enjoys being emotional candid. So, Moon in Capricorn can make someone emotionally stoic. This can also be true for other Earth moons, Taurus and Virgo, but this should not be mistaken for lack of emotions. Rather, it is the way Earth moons prefer to express themselves. Virgo moons may prefer spaces and time specifically designated to unleash their feelings (stoic at work or in the public eye yet will dispel all in the privacy of therapy, their own home, or with close friends).

Air moons will have quickly shifting emotions and can feel unsettled or unsure in what they're feeling. Aquarius moons, as it is a Saturn-ruled moon sign, will be more private with their emotional shifts. With Gemini moons, you will know exactly what they're feeling and when what they're feeling changes because it'll show on their faces and behavior. Libra moons' emotions shift based on the person they're around. If their loved one is upset with a breakup, a Libra moon will be upset right along with them. If someone's day is disrupted with an inconvenience, the Libra moon will empathize with that feeling and take it on themselves.

Leo moons tend to be outgoing, friendly, and loving. They are passionate individuals that command the same passion back. Sagittarius moons will also be just as passionate, outgoing, and friendly, but because their moon sign is ruled by Jupiter they may come off as overpowering and exaggerative. They also tend to be quick-witted and don't enjoy serious moments. Aries moons can be the same way and will deal with their emotions alone because they don't believe it is anyone else's responsibility.

Moon Aspects

The aspects and relationship the moon has with other planets in your chart is essential when thinking about major themes in your life that will resurface.

Moon and Saturn aspects in a birth chart, usually in a square or opposition, can manifest as someone who frequently experiences sadness or feelings of inadequacy. However, Moon and Saturn in a harmonious aspect (trine or conjunct) can make someone mature and sure of themselves, and depending on the chart as a whole, it manifests as reclusiveness and introversion.

Moon and Neptune aspects in a birth chart can create someone who is prophetic or connects with the dead. This can also make someone who prefers other states of mind, through drugs or through meditation. These people are dreamers and imaginative.

The Moon and Sun's interaction in the chart is tell-tale with one's parental relationship. When the Sun and Moon are in the same sign or in a harmonious aspect (conjunct, trine, or sextile) it often means one's mother and father are either still married or great co-parents. It represents an emotionally healthy relationship between one's mother and father.

The Sun and Moon opposite or square in a chart can represent divorce. It is common for full moon babies to be children of divorce. Other than this, the Sun and Moon in a disharmonious aspect can feel uncertain or incapable in expressing oneself or will have the lack of need to feel understood.

With this in mind, these aspects and the placement of the moon mix in diverse ways to create one's story. Astrology is never that cut and dry; a Capricorn moon is not always stoic and a Pisces moon is not always spiritual.

A Leo Moon may make someone who is a beacon of joy to others and wants to connect by using their own experiences and feelings to relate to others. However, if this Leo Moon makes a square to the Sun in the chart, it can create someone who makes their emotions precede the other or become self-centered in conversation.

A Libra moon will have their emotions extremely tied to whether justice is served and will really care about the feelings of others to ensure they're comfortable. However, if this Libra moon makes an aspect with Venus, it will make someone put their feelings below their romantic partner and people-please in that effort to make another comfortable and happy.

People often think of Aries moons or other fire moons as stereotypically mean or blunt, but Aries moons express their passion through forthrightness and honesty. However, an Aries Moon with a square or opposition to Mars can represent someone who will have outbursts or problems with emotional regulation if they are not careful. A harmonious aspect with a fire Moon and Mars can make someone put their emotions towards transformative actions, like working out when depressed or will need to have an active life to stay emotionally balanced.

The Moon is one of the more referred to luminaries in astrology because of how often it changes. The moon transits rapidly everyday. It can go through one sign within 2-3 days. When astrologers look into possible feelings that can arise for the day or potential areas of focus, we look at what house and sign the moon is transiting in our own birth charts.

This rapid change also activates the other placements and aspects in our chart. For example, if someone has a harmonious trine between Moon and Mars in Aries and Leo in their birth chart, and the Moon is transiting a fire sign, that person will be more inclined to get active or have a passionate burst of energy for those few days. The Moon transiting a positive Mercury-Venus aspect in a birth chart can send positive news about business or a contract, or will create a moment where someone wants to plan and execute an outing with a lover.

The Moon is special. It is the luminary of manifestation as it connects the unseen/spiritual with the Earth. This is why the Moon is revered in spiritual and religious practices and is closely studied in astrological practices.
